NEW VICE-PRESIDENT FOR BFSS

The British & Foreign School Society is pleased to welcome its new Vice-President, Professor John Furlong.   Professor Furlong will serve alongside the Society’s President, the Rt Hon David Lammy MP.

Professor Furlong, former Director of the University of Oxford Department of Education, will bring a wealth of relevant experience to BFSS.   He began his career as a teacher in an inner London comprehensive school before moving into higher education.  He has worked at seven different universities including being a professor and head of department in three.   He was Director of the University of Oxford Department of Education for nearly ten years.

During his career John Furlong has led numerous educational research projects, taught extensively at every level and published over 100 articles and books.   His most recent book “Education – an anatomy of the discipline” was recently awarded first prize by the UK Society of Eduational Studies.    He has had a range of national and international roles in education.   He was a member of the national executive of the Universities’ Council for the Education of Teachers 1992-97, President of the British Educational Research Association 2003-05, and a member of the UK RAE/REF education panels (expert review of the quality of research in universities) in 2008 and 2014.

He has chaired and participated in five national reviews of teacher education on behalf of different governments (Wales 2006;  Brunei 2008, Ireland 2012;  Northern Ireland 2014) and is currently teacher education adviser to the Welsh Government.   He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts.

The President and Vice-President of the BFSS, along with Council Members (the Society’s governing body), are elected by the Membership of the Society and the results reported to the AGM, which this year took place on 22nd May 2015.    At the AGM, tribute was paid to long standing Council Member Brian York, who retired from Council but will continue as a Member of the Society.   To read about his contribution to the Society, in particular the Archive, click here .
